The rubberised poncho is a waterproof and windproof layer designed to be worn over the uniform and equipment. The tailoring and hood configuration of the poncho ensure that the poncho remains in place over the shoulders and head while allowing free access of equipment as well as weapons manipulation. The poncho does not provide standalone insulation but can add significantly to protection from cold and wet weather when used as an outer layer to protect against rain and wind. Jackets or jerseys should be worn under the poncho for insulation.
